How CVTs Work

Especially in Nissan products. You will be in and out of the dealership numerous times and no fix. Very unsafe especially highway driving. Will never own one again. CVT will fail, and Nissan will just rip you for a new one, which will also fail. CVT is yerrible. CVT has never lived up to the hype. There are thousands of angry customers online. I had an 07 Altima with k miles the trans went out.

Nissan graciously told me that I am on my own. They would not offer a replacement or any help. Instead theyou gave me an estimate of I spoke with the Regional Director who has the authority to offer some type of good will gesture.

She told me that Nissan gave a 10k mile increase in warranty because of the known issues with CVT transmissions. Anything after that was on me. But they know that the problems start around the kk mile range.

Never again will I trust Nissan. You need help friend. Does a Nissan Sentra 1. I have a Sentra base, hasmiles on it and just started shifting a little rough. I have an 06 Nissan Altima with only k miles and the transmission is already slipping bad. Nissan 73, km and failedleft me stuck km from home.

Stay away from Nissan I know i will. Still have 1 yr to pay and we are scared to travel anywhereThis screwing up our life cause we love to travel. When i buy another car I will check reviews before i buy.A continuously variable transmission, or CVT, is a type of automatic transmission that provides more useable power, better fuel economy and a smoother driving experience than a traditional automatic transmission.

Conventional automatic transmissions use a set of gears that provides a given number of ratios or speeds. The transmission shifts gears to provide the most appropriate ratio for a given situation: Lowest gears for starting out, middle gears for acceleration and passing, and higher gears for fuel-efficient cruising.

The CVT replaces the gears with two variable-diameter pulleys, each shaped like a pair of opposing cones, with a metal belt or chain running between them. One pulley is connected to the engine input shaft and the other to the drive wheels output shaft. The halves of each pulley are movable; as the pulley halves come closer together the belt is forced to ride higher on the pulley, effectively making the pulley's diameter larger.

Changing the diameter of the pulleys varies the transmission's ratio the number of times the output shaft spins for each revolution of the enginein the same way, that a speed bike routes the chain over larger or smaller gears to change the ratio.

Making the input pulley smaller and the output pulley larger gives a low ratio a large number of engine revolutions producing a small number of output revolutions for better low-speed acceleration.

As the car accelerates, the pulleys vary their diameter to lower the engine speed as car speed rises. This is the same thing a conventional transmission does, but instead of changing the ratio in stages by shifting gears, the CVT continuously varies the ratio -- hence its name.

When driving a car with a CVT, you won't hear or feel the transmission shift -- it simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds or RPMs for better acceleration and lower RPMs for better fuel economy while cruising.

When you step hard on the accelerator, the engine races as it would with a slipping clutch or a failing automatic transmission. This is normal -- the CVT is adjusting the engine speed to provide optimal power for acceleration.

Some CVTs are programmed to change ratios in steps so that they feel more like a conventional automatic transmission. Engines do not develop constant power at all speeds; they have specific speeds where torque pulling powerhorsepower speed power or fuel efficiency are at their highest levels.

Because there are no gears to tie a given road speed directly to a given engine speed, the CVT can vary the engine speed as needed to access maximum power as well as maximum fuel efficiency.

This allows the CVT to provide quicker acceleration than a conventional automatic or manual transmission while delivering superior fuel economy. The CVT's biggest problem has been user acceptance.

cvt transmission

Because the CVT allows the engine to rev at any speed, the noises coming from under the hood sound odd to ears accustomed to conventional manual and automatic transmissions. The gradual changes in engine note sounds like a sliding transmission or a slipping clutch -- signs of trouble with a conventional transmission, but perfectly normal for a CVT.

Flooring an automatic car brings a lurch and a sudden burst of power, whereas CVTs provide a smooth, rapid increase in maximum power. To some drivers this makes the car feel slower; in fact, a CVT will generally out-accelerate an automatic.

Automakers have gone to great lengths to make the CVT feel more like a conventional transmission. Many CVTs are programmed to simulate the "kick-down" feel of a regular automatic when the pedal is floored. Some CVTs offer a "manual" mode with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters that allows the CVT to simulate a conventional stepped transmission. Because early automotive CVTs were limited as to how much horsepower they could handle, there has been some concern about the long-term reliability of the CVT.

Advanced technology has made the CVT much more robust. Nissan has more than a million CVTs in service around the world and says their long-term reliability is comparable to conventional transmissions.

Several hybrids, including the Toyota Prius family, use a type of transmission called a power-split transmission. While the power split feels like a CVT, it does not use the belt-and-pulley arrangement; instead, it uses a planetary gearset with both a gasoline engine and electric motor providing inputs. By varying the speed of the electric motorthe speed of the gasoline engine is also varied, allowing the gas engine to either run at a constant speed as the car accelerates or to stop completely.

Dutch automaker DAF first started using CVTs in their cars in the late s, but technology limitations made CVTs unsuitable for engines with more than horsepower. Improved CVTs capable of handling more powerful engines were developed in the late 90s and early s, and CVTs can now be found in cars from NissanAudiHondaMitsubishiand several other automakers.

Updated April 05, November 22, — A Nissan CVT settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that alleges the continuously variable transmissions are defective in these Nissan models.

Nissan North America, Inc. All of the lawsuits allege the CVTs shake, jerk, hesitate, lag, decelerate and finally fail, requiring expensive transmission replacements. Nissan denies and continues to deny all of the lawsuit's claims, but says it agreed to settle to prevent the prolonged battle and expense of continued litigation.

According to the CVT settlement, Nissan will extend the new vehicle limited warranty for the transmission assembly, including the valve body and torque converter, and automatic transmission control unit by 24 months or 24, miles, whichever occurs first.

What Is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)?

The warranty extension will be subject to the terms and conditions of the original warranty. Nissan has also agreed to reimburse customers for parts and labor paid for qualifying repairs involving the replacement or repair of the transmission assembly or transmission control unit if the work was done after the expiration of the powertrain coverage under the original warranty but within the limits of the warranty extension.

The replacement or repair must have occurred on or before the vehicle has been in service for 84 months or driven for 84, miles, whichever occurs first. The voucher must be used within nine months of the effective date of the settlement. In addition, an owner cannot use both the voucher and be reimbursed for repairs.

So, how long do CVT transmissions last? You should look into it if you have intended to purchase a CVT car. A CVT is a lesser-known option to conventional automatic transmissions.

What does CVT mean in cars? How long does a cvt transmission last? The concerns about the shifters lifespan have started after several issues in the first-generation models.

Jeep also had issues in the Compass model along with a few others. It has a steel chain about an inch wide that is the main route for transferring power from the engine to the rest of the car. If this chain breaks down for some reasons, the transmission will stop functioning.

When the chain fails, it shatters into pieces with shrapnel everywhere. A traditional auto shifter does not create such a mess when it fails. There could be worn out valves, burnt out clutches, or cracked sun shell, but nothing messy as metal shrapnel. However, the automakers have been working relentlessly to improve the technology. Almost all the newer models of the brands are better than their predecessors.

How long do CVT transmissions last if you take good care of them?

How A CVT Works by TEAM

At least more than five years! CVT is still a new technology and the automakers have been working to improve it. But, they will still last for a long time if you do proper maintenance.

CVT helps with fuel efficiency by increasing the mileage and it has several other advantages. However, not all the models enjoy all the benefits equally. Hopefully this article is useful for you. Though Honda guarantee the transmission fluid for a lifetime but it is not like that:.I heard that early Nissan CVT transmissions have reliability issues.

They broke often and needed to be replaced. Has that problem been resolved? Or do new Nissan cars have the same CVT problems? Too much stop and go on my commute Any input is appreciated…. I have not heard of any problems with the Nissan CVT. I believe they were having a rash of CVT problems a couple of years ago but that problem has been fixed now. The newer ones are not getting the warranty extensions, according to the website.

Do not let Jiffy Lube sell you on a transmission flush. As long as you use the correct fluid, and change it every 30k to 50k miles, the transmissions have had few failures since ' The biggest complaints were related to bearing noises, but no actual failures. Nissan had just been removing the transmissions and slipping new ones in whenever someone complained to their service manager about the bearing noise.

Now to sort of hijack the post, considering potential of failure and expenses to fix, would the OP be better of with a non CVT transmission anyways.

Nissan has had a lot of re-programming on their CVT transmissions also. Make sure it is up to date on their campaigns [ recalls ]. The new generation Nissan CVT seems better than before, but hard to say how it will wear.

The new CVT is awe inspiring. I could go on all day about it but the most important thing to remember with CVT is that the torque is always there for you to accelerate, and you do accelerate every bit as fast as a regular automatic.

Especially in manual shift mode.

The smoothest shift you will ever experience! And no harsh downshift and engine roar while passing in automatic mode! Just push down a little on the gas and overtake with ease! Quote from MR. I like my standard transmission, a thing of proven beauty that makes me smile and will last far, far beyondmiles if it is like other standard transmissions that I have owned.

Sounds alot like any other CVT, only I consider those points more annoying than anything else. I rented a Dodge Caliber for a week a couple years ago. It had a CVT. So not only was it slow, but it was noisy. When you stepped on the gas you had to wait until the RPMs ran up into the engine? It was like the engine and transmission were connected via rubber band, which I guess they sort of were actually. GM has been crucified time and again for bad designs. And they have also been praised for great designs.

Quite a few people have suffered from the chevy built V-6 engines 2. Still do it to this day. How long has the engine been used for now?A continuously variable transmission CVT is a transmission that operates on an ingenious pulley system that automatically varies the transmission ratio, allowing an infinite variability between highest and lowest gears with no discrete steps or shifts.

CVTs provide more useable power, better fuel economy and a smoother driving experience than traditional transmissions that use gearboxes with fixed numbers of gear sets. The primary clutch is an advanced form of centrifugal clutch and is typically mounted to the output end of the engine crankshaft. The clutch has two sheave faces; one that is laterally fixed stationary sheaveand one that can move in and out to engage the belt moveable sheave.

In most systems, at idle the sheave surfaces are spread at their widest spacing, the belt is riding on the post or shaft at the smallest diameter of the clutch, and the belt is not pinched by the sheave faces. The secondary clutch is mounted to the input shaft of the transmission, transaxle, or the like. They are made of rubber components reinforced with Kevlar and other materials to enhance durability. A CVT is an automatic transmission that can change seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios. A CVT may feel like it never shifts gears, and in fact, they never do.

With a steel belt drive, steel pulleys and sophisticated electronics all lubricated by special fluids, this transmission utilizes variable ratio engineering to keep the engine running at the most efficient and powerful level possible, right in the power curve sweet spot all the time. The biggest advantage of the CVT over automatic or manual units is its ability to provide power without shifting while driving up a hill, for example. Because the CVT transmission operates without any physical gears, it has an infinite number of ratios, making it the most fuel-efficient technology.

The above lubrication issues may trigger a Warning Light or Check Engine Light — this could be a transmission problem. The most important thing you can do to maintain the health of a CVT is to take care of the transmission fluid.
