Should gas tank hisses when opened

I used to drive nissan pathfinder before I bought this car and gas cap on that car used to hiss when I opened it like it was releasing pressure. I understand that it's a sealed system, I was also wondering if it's true for every make and model vehicle. So, should every car's fuel cap hiss when it's open? So, if my car's fuel cap doesn't hiss when I open it in hot summer days in texas, then it's not normal and cap needs to be replaced?

Yes and no, the hiss is normal and all cars and truck with a "closed" system will hiss sometimes. If the cap does not hiss on a hot day it means 2 thing the evap system in the car has already vented or it didnt. For your hyundai if your cap is loose or no good the check engine light will come on and store a fault code for emission evap system failure, which includes you gas cap.

Dont worry about the hiss but open slowly so that fuel does not spit at you just in case. And yes and no for hissing on all car's fuel caps. Again depending on how the evap system in designed. They are not all the same. Yes, the hissing if fine. Cars are designed with a sealed system to prevent fuel from escaping into the atmoshpere. The hissing is air entering the gas tank. As fuel is used there is negative pressure in the gas tank thus the hissing you hear when taking fuel cap.

Gas expands with heat and the vapor will build in the tank. Many years ago the would actually "puke" gas onto the men gassing them. Remove the cap slowly and don't cause any static discharge when taking it off.

Cell phones should be considered a no no at the fuel isle. I was just wondering if my gas cap should hiss when I open to cap for a fill up. Should my sonata's gas cap hiss too? should gas tank hisses when opened

Whenever i open the gas cap pressure is relieved. I don't think that the tank has come down before so don't know if the vent line has been pinched or not. I thought maybe the casiter solenoid wasn't working, but then I remembered that cansiter doesn't hold pressure, only fumes, which are purged by the solenoid.

What other things should I look for? SN Certified Technician. Nov 29, 31, 27 The whole idea of the canister is to prevent gasoline fumes from entering the atmospere. Having a vented cap would defeat it's purpose. Oh yeah, when I pulled off the hard plastic line coming from the tank and took a wiff of it, I smelled like raw fuel. So I don't know, maybe my canister is bad?

If your tank hisses when you open the cap, something is wrong. My GT never did this. Michael Yount Mustang Master. Apr 10, 9, 4 79 Charlotte, NC Visit site. The vented cap will let air enter, and if the pressure reaches too high a point, it will act like a relief valve and release an over pressure. But it shouldn't be venting a noticeable amount when you pull the cap off. Have you pulled the codes to see if you're getting a purge valve error code? Temporarily pull the tank vent line off the canister.

If that doesn't relieve the problem, the vent line is not clear between the tank and the cannister. Michael Yount said:. Apr 16, 0 0 41 Gadsden, AL members.

BMW i3 REX How to Open the Gas Tank Door

For fuel to come out, air must be able to enter or you vacuum lock the fuel pump.Propane tanks will sometimes give an indication of a leak by sound. People will describe this noise as a "hissing" noise coming from the tank getting louder as they get closer.

Although product release is occurring in some capacity, it might not necessarily be a propane gas "leak". Some of the situations consumers may encounter with propane tank "hissing" are depicted below.

The fixed liquid level gauge bleeder valve is required to be opened by the delivery person every time the tank is filled with propane. On occasion, the delivery driver may not completely close the bleeder valve following the filling process or the bleeder valve opening may have been blocked by a small piece of debris from inside the tank that cleared following the drivers departure.

If this is the case, simply turning the bleeder valve clockwise will close the valve and stop the flow of gas. This is not unheard of and is easily remedied by simply closing the bleeder valve. On hot days when the sun is high overhead and a propane delivery has recently been made, the safety relief valve may open slightly allowing excess pressure to vent.

If the relief valve is opened, the protective cap will be removed from the top of the valve from the pressure buildup, as pictured to the left. Doing so may cause the relief valve to open all the way.

The relief valve is doing what it was designed to do and on hot, sunny days, propane tanks are subject to excess pressure due to expanding liquid within the tank. One way to remedy the situation is to cool the tank down by spraying water from a garden hose on the surface of the tank.

This will generally cause the relief valve to close. Just noticed that my gas tank hisses 08 ninja I got a pre-season tune up about a month ago, and she's been sitting there ever since. It was not warm at all today btw, the bike was not in any sunlight, it was in the garage all day I came home after work, and went over to the bike to see how she was doing I opened and closed the gas cap After a second time of opening and closing the cap, the hissing stopped.

Anybody, have any insight on this "non-ridden, cold temperature gas tank hissing"? Last edited: May 1, Site Supporter. It did it on my for the 1.

So my Bro in law just bought a 2nd hand City ZX because he is a learner. He came over to pick me up today for the first time so I decided to add some System G to his car since its a model. When I unscrewed the fuel cap, there was a hiss and quite a bit of pressurized petrol fumes came out, I mean I could see the vapour haze and it lasted for around 5 seconds continuously.

The car is parked in the hot sun all day at home as well as in office parking. Is this cause for any alarm or is it just due to the heat? Does it indicate a blockage somewhere in the fuel inlet? Help would be appreciated. View My Garage. Originally Posted by Mortis. Bosssukiwa. Hi Mortis, This is normal when the car is parked in the sun. Nothing to worry about. Just wanted to clarify as the quanity and pressure of the fumes seemed to be quite a bit, A lot of vapour had built up in there and I havent experienced such a phenomenon in any of my cars before so I thought its better to clarify.

Hissing Noise - Is my Propane Tank Leaking?

While I will be giving a 6 year ownership review in about 2 weeks, I have a question. On the 27th October, the car was running low on gas and went to a gas station to fill her up. When the attendant, opened the cap, there was "husssh" noise with the air from Petrol tank going out and with some pressure. The sound was kind of muted and I was surprised, because it is the 1st time that this has happened.

The attendant told me, "Sir, once in a while open the tank and then close it". But am still surprised as to why it happened. This is a statement propane cylinder users sometimes make following the exchange or re-filling of their bottle. The bottle feels heavier and obviously is filled with propane but opening the valve produces no escaping gas. OPD valves are designed so that propane will not flow from the service valve unless it is hooked up to a hose end connection.

This is the way the OPD cylinder valve was designed. Unattached propane cylinders equipped with OPD valves will not allow gas to flow when the service valve handwheel is opened. The same is true of forklift cylinder valves. The design of the OPD valve is such that turning the cylinder service valve handwheel will not produce any effect if the cylinder is not hooked up to an appliance.

In other words, a connection must be made between the appliance hose end and the cylinders service valve. The inside of the OPD valve is engineered to only allow propane in or out if the internal valve is actuated by being depressed. This OPD valve feature adds additional safety in case the handwheel is turned, opening the valve. For this reason, OPD equipped cylinders will not allow gas out of the cylinder when opened.

The same is true for industrial forklift cylinders. The hose end connection on either a fill hose or appliance supply line is designed to work only with OPD equipped cylinders. For the OPD valve to operate with the handwheel open, the hose end connection must be securely attached.

Pressurized hissing sound when opening the fuel tank?

The picture to the right shows a hose end connection. Notice the elevated brass fitting is surrounded by acme threads. When attached to a cylinder valve and tightened, the brass fitting will push the internal valve open and allow gas to flow out of the cylinder to the appliance, if the handwheel is in the open position. This fitting must be in place for gas to flow out of the cylinder. Otherwise, turning the handwheel will not produce the intended result. OPD Valve Design The design of the OPD valve is such that turning the cylinder service valve handwheel will not produce any effect if the cylinder is not hooked up to an appliance.

Gas regulator noises may include humming, hissing, and other sounds.

While many gas grill and some other appliance manufacturers say a bit of humming at the gas regulator for appliances is normal and harmless, not everyone agrees. Immediate LP or natural gas safety hazards : if there is evidence of an LP or natural gas leak at a building, gas odors, for example, you should:. Gas regulator noises : while many gas grill and some other appliance manufacturers say a bit of humming at the gas regulator for appliances is normal and harmless, not everyone agrees.

Certainly if there is a gas odor or gas leak, the gas supply should be shut off immediately and you need to call a professional for diagnosis and repair of the trouble. Some experts explain that over time a humming gas regulator may become unsafe; and there are other noises that have other meanings at gas regulators, pipes, and LP gas tanks. I have a Wayne natural gas burner insert that replaced my oil fired Beckett burner in my furnace.

Occasionally there is a buzzing noise that is coming from the combination gas valve. It is rare, intermittent, and stops after a minute or so, and usually does not reoccur this heat cycle. I'm not expert on gas regulator noises but from reading advice from some appliance manufacturers and from several gas distribution companies I can suggest some regulator noises and their possible causes.

Watch out : But before going through noise sources, make darn sure that any hissing you hear is not a gas leak as a gas leak risks fire and explosion. If you suspect a gas leak shut down the gas supply immediately. An important point to note is that under normal operation, a propane regulator will make a "humming" noise.

This is normal and should not be construed as a problem or regulator malfunction. Our hot water heater is making the sound you hear in the attached video. The sound is intermittent. Do you have any idea what this could be?
